A Wilkes-Barre woman critically burned in a fire at her Kidder Street home earlier this month died Thursday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest in Allentown, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center said.

Clora Sylvester, 70, died from complications of third-degree burns, according to a press release Friday from Daniel Buglio, first deputy coroner/operations manager.

Sylvester was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m. Thursday. Her death was ruled accidental, according to the release.

Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney previously said the fire also was ruled accidental and caused by a space heater located too close to a chair. The investigation by the Capt. Francis Evanko determined there was an inoperable smoke alarm in the residence.

City fire and police responded to Sylvester’s house at 174 Kidder St. just before 3:25 p.m. on Jan. 2 and found heavy smoke and fire on their arrival. No smoke alarms were sounding, when they arrived, Delaney said.

Sylvester was outside on the porch when emergency responders arrived. She was the only one home at the time. Additionally, there was no one home in the apartments at the adjacent 176 Kidder St. address.

City ambulance personnel transported Sylvester to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township. She was treated and transported to Lehigh Valley that same day. She had been listed in critical condition while at Lehigh Valley.
